Mergers & acquisitions

  • Studybee (Malmö, developer of a solution for schools and teachers that extends Google Classroom functionality, founded 2015) was acquired by Unikum, a Stockholm-based digital school platform/app founded in 2005. The price was not disclosed (Swedish, machine translation).
    • Studybee was founded by Ian Rattigan, and has raised around SEK25M in equity funding, according to data registered with Bolagsverket (sourced via Eivora). Largest outside investor is Djäkne Startup Studio.
    • Unikum was founded by Jonas Ryberg, who is still majority owner. Among outside shareholders are JCE and Philian.
    • 📊 For 2023, Studybee reported net revenue of SEK2.4M, and a loss of -SEK2.1M. Unikum reported net revenue of SEK62.6M, and a break-even result.
  • A major US deal with a Swedish angle: OpenAI is buying io, a hardware company founded by former Apple design chief Jony Ive and others, in a deal worth $6.5B. In late 2024, publicly traded Swedish investment firm Flat Capital invested SEK34M in io (English). Flat Capital co-founder Sebastian Siemiatkowski⁦‪ (otherwise known as Klarna CEO) writes on X that Flat Capital will "now receive even more shares in OpenAI at a hefty return" (English).
